  • Inconsistent and Tactless

I've watched all the trek movies and TV series shows many times over the last 30 years and this just isn't Trek. I actually really tried to buy into it, but there were just too many inconsistencies and conflicts with existing canon. For those who say we should get over that and move on, I say then what's the point of calling it Trek? If they wanted to make something else, they should have called it something else. The point of having new Trek stories to watch is to continue the larger story in a way that fits and is consistent with the stories that have been told so far. This doesn't do that. Also, Trek has always been good about presenting current social issues in the context of good stories in ways that are thought provoking, but which are family friendly, unoffensive, and don't get in the way of the story. This show is none of that. Rather, many the episodes feel like the writers' had some foul language and controversial ideas they wanted to use and then to tried to figure out how to write a story to put them in. Crass, offensive, and no sense of tact whatsoever. Garbage.
  • Not Star Trek

This series should have some other name. This is NOT Star Trek. So disappointing. They are trying to rewrite everything. They are trying to discredit every other Star Trek series and change every storyline asking the way. Waste. Of. Time and money. Got 4 episodes into this, and couldn’t watch it any further.

Take it for what it is. It’s current Star Trek with non Star -Trek twists and turns. One review said Gene would turn over on his grave...well that’s a good thing cause the series needs to grow and this is a great one to get it going. Enjoy it. It’s well written and fun!

  • It's nothing more than bad soap opera

I don’t see how this show can be considered 'Star Trek' anything/. I started watching Star Trek as a teenager in the '60s and have watched all the series since then. I've watched season 1 and was disappointed. Even more so in season 2. It's a very bad soap opera that had promise through the first couple of episodes, but went down hill quickly. The writing is terrible. The main character is an over emotional tear factory that you end up hoping gets written out of the show. There are a lot of other good characters, but the writing and plot does not leverage them very well. My opinion - this is the worst of the entire Star Trek universe, including all of the movies as well as the cartoon TV shows.

One of the best things about this series is that it features an ongoing story arc. It’s a slow burn. You don’t realize what they’re building at first with it. Then it hits you exactly what they’re doing, and it bowls you over. I was skeptical of having to pay to watch any Trek show, but by the end of season 1 you’ll be glad you did. It brings back several classic Trek tropes and also features some mind-boggling plot twists.

I’m digging it. Lots of folks are geeking out over this and over analyzing it and that’s fine. To each their own. I feel that this was a solid step in the right direction to revive this franchise and I’m extremely happy to see it back.

Any honest Trek will tell you that most Trek shows don’t start off well, in fact, many of the beloved Trek shows’ first seasons have been relatively weak and messy, but what Star Trek Discovery has done is buck against the trend. This first season is one of strongest outings of any Trek show, bar perhaps The Original Series itself. Strong performances, great plot and pacing, as well as stunning visual effects all help elevate the show. You will find some people on here undoubtedly complaining about how it breaks canon and how it is not Star Trek. Firstly, the show does not break canon, nothing that appears in the show ever directly contradicts outright stated canon. Secondly, this IS Star Trek, it’s just in a different format from where it used to be episodic in nature with each episode wrapped up in a nice bow, now we have a long form story with a season long arc where previous episodes’ events have can impact down the line. Star Trek Discovery represents change, a sign of Trek’s own growth with the times, and what is more Star Trek than boldly going into a different way of storytelling and trying something new?

The connection to the original series combined with the special effects and production quality of this day and age make it something I look forward to watching. I can’t wait until season 3 starts!
  • A brilliant series built for the new generation

As someone who has grown up watching Star Trek since the day I was born, I love this series. It’s a refreshing take built on the foundations of what made the series special to begin with. It explores familial relations, friendships, and the moral dilemmas of war. I’m nearly 21 years old, and my family has watched an episode of Star Trek every Sunday night of a majority of my childhood. We were the family with the tribble ornaments and my dad preached logic to me like I was a young Vulcan myself. You couldn’t go a holiday without someone commenting on the Klingon dictionary on the coffee table. You could not meet a truer fan, and seeing Captain Janeway lead a Star ship was important to me as a young girl with big dreams. Representation matters and this series has more of that than any other. This is Star Trek for a new generation. It is riveting and fast paced without losing the contemplative element. The castings are brilliant. I love this show and am looking forward to watching all seasons again and again. The only trick is getting all of my friends to watch it.
